The Teatro Fru Fru is one of the most emblematic historic venues in the Historic Center of Mexico City, on Donceles Street 24. Opened in 1899 as Teatro Renacimiento and built in the elegant Second Empire style, it became the first theater in the capital with electric lighting in the era when it bore the name of actress Virginia Fábregas. In 1973 it was acquired and refurbished by actress and singer Irma Serrano "La Tigresa", who gave it its current name and turned it into the stage for celebrated, boundary-pushing productions. With a capacity of around 1,300 seats, its opulent nineteenth-century architecture has made it a home for theater, concerts by artists such as Natalia Lafourcade and Mon Laferte, and a filming location (Spectre, Cantinflas). Its age and enveloping atmosphere have surrounded it with legends and tales of paranormal events —such as the lobby statue to which actors leave an offering so their plays will not fail— that come back to life today on night-time legend walks through the heart of the Historic Center.
